Thomas Kretschmer laid the foundation for his career in the banking sector when he joined the Sparkasse bank academy 1992 in Dusseldorf. From 1998 to 2019 Thomas Kretschmer has been in different management functions for Sparkasse’s branch offices in the German state of North Rhine Westphalia. After his banking career he focuses in managing companies he is invested in. Primarily they are operating in the field of steel fabrication and machinery.

Besides his professional career he has been the chairman of the CDU local chapter in Duisburg-Meiderich.

For almost 20 years Thomas Kretschmer served the German Football Bundesliga team MSV Duisburg. This includes board and advisory board memberships of the club.
